Free, Cheap, Edible: How Nonprofits Can Leverage In-kind Donations

Never again pay for computers, software of furniture? It's possible. Businesses have warehouses full of things they no longer need. They may work with donation aggregators who connect nonprofits with everything from mattresses to building supplies, from paper goods to polo shirts.

Then there are community members willing to donate time, professional services or food.

In this webinar, nonprofit executives will learn how to assess their overall needs, determine what in-kind resources might meet those needs, and make the ask.

Developing a formal in-kind donation program has a two-fold benefit: You get the professional services or the paper products or the software or the clothes you need to run your program and help your clients. You also are able to better communicate the full value of your program and services to donors and funders.

Tracking the value of in-kind donation gives you the opportunity to tell the full story of your program and show the full cost of running it. A formal in-kind donation program also demonstrates community buy-in to your organization and your mission. The number of volunteer hours donated tells donors that this program is valued. The fact that you need to use volunteers for skilled services tells donors you may be underfunded.

And knowing where the free, cheap and edible donations are can stretch your budget in ways you never imagined.

The workshop will cover:

  • the variety of in-kind donations, from food to furniture
  • assessing what your nonprofit needs
  • review of the laws about in-kind donations
  • resources for finding what you need
  • what is needed to create a credible in-kind program
  • resources to help establish fair market value of donations

As always, time will be allowed to answer your questions.
